What are Social Signals?
Social Signals are not a direct ranking factor — but a powerful catalyst for factors that do rank. A viral post on LinkedIn or Twitter brings more visitors, generates natural backlinks, and increases brand searches on Google. Use social media therefore not as an SEO tactic, but as a multiplier for your best content. Especially in the B2B space, LinkedIn engagement can significantly strengthen your visibility and authority.
Social Signals refer to activities in social media such as shares, likes, comments, and retweets of content. For a long time there was debate about whether Social Signals are a direct ranking factor. The facts today are clear: Social Signals are not a direct ranking factor for Google SEO — Google does not count social shares in its ranking algorithm. However, Social Signals are indirectly important because they lead to more brand mentions, make content more visible, and generate potential backlinks — these signals then influence rankings.
The mechanism is indirect: a viral tweet or Facebook post about an article leads to more website visits, generating user signals (dwell time, CTR). More shares also mean more websites link to that article — and backlinks are actually an important ranking factor. Social Signals are therefore a catalyst for other, more direct ranking signals. Google also crawls social media pages, which could cause content to be discovered faster, improving indexing speed.
For practice: actively market your best content on social media — not for direct ranking effects, but to generate traffic, brand awareness, and backlink opportunities. Create share buttons on your pages to simplify sharing. Engagement in social channels also supports your brand reputation, which indirectly leads to more direct traffic. Consider which content works well in which channels — a white paper on LinkedIn has different chances than an infographic on Pinterest. Social media is not the primary SEO lever, but an important multiplier for content marketing.
