What is Structured Data?
Without Structured Data, you’re giving away visibility in search results. Star ratings, FAQ boxes, and price displays visually highlight your listing and demonstrably increase click-through rates by 20–30%. Furthermore, AI systems like Google AI Overviews use structured data to draw on your content as a source — a decisive advantage in the era of generative search.
Structured Data refers to machine-readable data formats embedded in the HTML code of a website to communicate to search engines the context and meaning of content. The international standard for this is Schema.org, a vocabulary with hundreds of entity types like Product, Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, or Event. By implementing Structured Data on your website, you enable Google and other search engines to interpret your content more precisely.
Google’s preferred format for Structured Data is JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data). It is embedded as a separate script block in the HTML and is thus independent of the visible page content. This makes JSON-LD particularly easy to maintain, as changes to the markup have no effect on the frontend. Google supports over 30 different Structured Data types, each of which can trigger specific Rich Snippets in search results — from star ratings to FAQ accordions to recipe carousels.
In SEO practice, Structured Data is no longer an optional bonus but a prerequisite for maximum visibility in search results. Google increasingly uses structured data for AI-powered features like AI Overviews and the Knowledge Graph. Companies that consistently implement Structured Data benefit from higher click-through rates through visually appealing search results and from better discoverability by AI systems. The Google Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator are the most important tools for validating your implementation.
