What Are URL Parameters?
Uncontrolled URL parameters can waste up to 90% of the crawl budget on large online stores. Every filter and sort combination creates a new URL with nearly identical content — a massive duplicate content problem. Canonical tags, robots.txt rules, and Search Console bring this under control and ensure that Google prioritizes your important pages.
URL parameters are dynamic additions to a URL after a question mark, for example https://shop.com/products?category=shoes&sort=price&page=1. These parameters are commonly used for filters, sorting, pagination, and tracking. They are a frequent cause of crawling issues and duplicate content, since the same page can be accessed in hundreds of variants through different parameter combinations — each with a different URL.
Google recognizes that many of these parameters lead to identical or very similar pages and treats them as duplicate content. Crawl budget is wasted as Googlebot must crawl and analyze all parameter variants before reaching the more important original content. For large online stores, parameter variants can consume 80–90% of the crawl budget. To avoid this, SEO experts use URL parameter handling strategies in Google Search Console or place canonical tags on the preferred variant.
In practice, non-critical parameters should be excluded via robots.txt (e.g., tracking parameters or session IDs). Relevant filters should use rel=canonical pointing to the standard URL or be implemented via JavaScript (without changing the URL). An XML sitemap should contain only the most important URL variants, not all combinations. For pagination (page 1, 2, 3…), rel=next and rel=prev tags are more helpful than different canonical variants. Ideally, filter options are implemented via JavaScript-based filters that do not change the URL.
