URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

In brief

A URL is the unique address of a web page on the internet, consisting of protocol, domain, and path.

What Is a URL?

Descriptive URLs like /glossary/search-engine-optimization/ tell users and search engines at a glance what to expect — cryptic addresses like /product.php?id=12847 do not. Beyond the ranking advantage, clean URLs also improve click-through rate in search results because searchers trust the URL. During a relaunch or restructuring, complete 301 redirects are mandatory to preserve accumulated ranking power.

A URL is the unique address of a web page on the internet — for example https://www.synoradzki.de/glossar/. It consists of a protocol (https://), domain (synoradzki.de), and path (/seo-glossar/). The URL structure is a direct ranking factor and simultaneously affects how search engines and users understand and navigate the page. A descriptive, clean URL structure significantly improves both SEO performance and user experience.

Technically, Google uses URL structure as a classification and crawl priority signal. Descriptive URLs (e.g., /glossary/search-engine-optimization/) are crawled faster and understood better than cryptic URLs with many parameters and numbers (e.g., /product.php?id=12847&sort=price). Long, nested paths signal a deep page hierarchy to Google and can waste crawl budget. URL parameters for filters and sorting are equally problematic, leading to hundreds of different URLs — this causes duplicate content issues and inefficient crawling.

In practice, URLs should be a maximum of 3–4 levels deep, contain descriptive keywords, and use hyphens (not underscores) to separate words. Avoid special characters and accented letters. For store websites, it is advisable to block filter variants via robots.txt or use canonical tags instead of letting hundreds of URL variants be crawled. After website relaunches or restructurings, old URLs must redirect with 301 redirects to the new URLs to preserve ranking power and avoid error pages.
