Vitals

In brief

Vitals is shorthand for Core Web Vitals, Google's three metrics for load time, interactivity, and visual stability of a website.

What Are Vitals?

Good Vitals scores benefit you twice: they improve your Google rankings and simultaneously boost conversion rates because users prefer fast, stable pages. Google collects this data from real users, not just lab tests — so you should regularly check your Search Console under “Page Experience” to see how your pages perform in practice. Mobile devices have stricter limits than desktops.

Vitals is short for Core Web Vitals — Google’s metrics system for user experience when loading and interacting with a website. The three metrics are: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint, loading speed), INP (Interaction to Next Paint, responsiveness), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift, visual stability). These metrics are not artificial — they measure real user problems that lead to frustration. Since 2021, Core Web Vitals have been an official Google ranking factor and significantly influence the Page Experience assessment.

How the Vitals work: LCP measures how quickly the main content becomes visible (target: under 2.5 seconds). INP (formerly First Input Delay, FID) measures how quickly the browser responds to clicks or other interactions (target: under 200 milliseconds). CLS measures unexpected layout shifts — when buttons suddenly change position because ads or images load (target: CLS below 0.1). Google collects this data from real user visits (Real User Monitoring), not just lab tests. The data is shown in Search Console under “Page Experience” — divided into “good,” “needs improvement,” and “poor.”

In practice, Core Web Vitals are improved through several measures: for LCP, identify Largest Contentful Paint elements (images, text blocks, videos), optimize server response time, and prioritize large resources. Lazy loading for images below the viewport helps. For INP, optimize JavaScript — heavy scripts block interactivity. Long tasks should be broken into smaller chunks (task splitting). For CLS, define explicit dimensions (width/height) for all images and iframes, and prevent ads from loading unexpectedly. PageSpeed Insights and Chrome DevTools show where problems lie. Mobile devices have stricter limits than desktops — optimizing mobile vitals automatically optimizes desktop too.
