Voice Search

In brief

Voice search is searching via voice command through Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa and requires dedicated SEO strategies.

With voice search, the assistant usually reads out only one answer — whoever wins the Featured Snippet gets all the traffic. That fundamentally changes SEO strategy: FAQ structures, short concise answers, and Schema Markup become mandatory. Voice search is especially relevant for local businesses, as users on the go frequently search for “near me” offerings.

Voice search refers to searching via voice command through assistants like Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa. The user speaks a question or search term instead of typing it — the assistant converts speech to text and displays results. Voice search is growing continuously, especially for on-the-go searches, while driving, or on smart-home devices. This search mode has deep implications for SEO, as voice searches differ significantly from text queries in grammar and content.

The way it works differs fundamentally from classic text search: voice queries are typically longer, more conversational, and contain more long-tail keywords and question words (who? how? where?). The assistant uses Natural Language Processing (automated language understanding) to capture intent — often the best answer from one webpage is enough to land in voice results. Featured Snippets and Position Zero are especially frequently served in voice search, since the assistant reads only one or a few answers instead of showing multiple results. Local business information is also prioritized, especially for queries like “Where’s the nearest pizza place?”

For SEO practice, voice search means expanding your keyword strategy: alongside keywords like “best espresso machine,” you should also optimize for “Which is the best espresso machine?” or “How do I choose a good espresso machine?” Content should be structured in FAQ format — questions and short, concise answers rank better in voice search results. Schema Markup (FAQ schema, Local Business schema) is practically mandatory. Mobile optimization and fast load times are also essential, since voice users are often on the go. Whoever optimizes their website for conversational keywords and voice patterns will sooner or later gain significant advantages in voice search traffic.
