Dwell Time

In brief

Dwell time is the amount of time a user spends on a page after clicking on it from search results before returning to the SERP.

What Is Dwell Time?

Short dwell time is a strong negative signal: if users immediately return to Google, the search engine interprets this as a sign that your content doesn’t satisfy the search intent. High-quality content, clear structure, and fast load times are the best levers for increasing dwell time. Combined with other engagement signals, it indirectly influences your rankings.

Dwell time (Verweildauer) is the amount of time a user spends on a page after clicking on it from search results before returning to the search results. Long dwell time signals that the content is relevant and high-quality. Short dwell time indicates irrelevance (pogo-sticking). Google treats dwell time as an indirect ranking factor — not a direct signal, but a quality indicator. A page with high dwell time statistically ranks better than one with low dwell time.

Technically, Google measures dwell time through its logging infrastructure: when a user returns to Google search, that information is recorded. Google cannot directly measure how long someone reads a page but estimates it through return behavior. A long dwell time before returning likely indicates good content; an immediate return likely indicates poor content. Google aggregates these signals across thousands of users for each SERP slot.

In SEO practice, dwell time should be the goal through great content, not an isolated optimization target. To improve dwell time: content must be highly relevant, quick to understand, and visually appealing. Long-form content often ranks better because users need more time to read it. But well-structured, medium-length content can also achieve excellent dwell time. UX, load speed, and readability are just as important as content quality.
