What Is Pogo-Sticking?
Pogo-sticking is one of the clearest signals for Google that your page is missing the search intent. If you observe good impressions but declining rankings for certain keywords, pogo-sticking could be the cause. Check whether your content answers the question behind the search query, whether the above-the-fold area is convincing, and whether load time is adequate — because users decide within seconds.
Pogo-sticking refers to a user’s rapid return to Google search results immediately after clicking on a result — the user bounces quickly back and forth between the SERP and the website, like on a pogo stick. This signals that the visited page didn’t deliver what the user wanted. When Google registers many pogo-sticking events for a specific search query, it can mean the ranking page no longer fits that query or that the search intent was misunderstood.
Technically, Google can measure pogo-sticking through multiple signals: the time between click and return to the SERP (dwell time), Chrome data from users using Google devices, and patterns in clickstreams. However, pogo-sticking itself is not a direct ranking factor that Google has officially named. But the underlying user signals (quick return = low engagement, low dwell time) indirectly influence rankings. High pogo-sticking could be one reason why a page falls from top positions.
In practice, this means: pages should clearly and immediately show they answer the search query. The first heading (H1) should be identical to or very similar to the search query. The first paragraph should give a clear answer, not explain things circuitously. A page titled “Best Laptops 2026” that instead spends the first 500 words on general laptop information will trigger pogo-sticking. With good internal linking to semantically related content, you can also improve user signals — users stay longer and click more.
