What Is a Follow Link?
Follow links are the currency of link building: only they pass ranking power to the linked page and strengthen its authority in Google’s eyes. A single follow link from a topically relevant, authoritative website can do more than a hundred nofollow links from forums or comment sections. Building high-quality follow links through excellent content is the most sustainable SEO strategy.
A follow link refers to a standard hyperlink without special link attributes, instructing search engines to follow the link and pass its ranking power (link juice) to the destination page. Unlike nofollow links, which carry an instruction for Google not to evaluate the link, a follow link is a fully weighted ranking factor. The vast majority of links on the internet are follow links — only when a webmaster deliberately sets the rel=“nofollow” attribute does a link become a nofollow link.
Technically, the follow link signal is automatically assumed by Google when no other attribute is present. In HTML, a follow link simply looks like this: <a href="https://example.com">link text</a> — without any additional attributes. Google crawls follow links, uses them to discover new pages, and evaluates the destination page positively (all other factors being equal). The anchor text (the clickable text) is also analyzed and signals to Google what the destination page is about. Follow links are one of the most important ranking signals, especially external links from high-quality pages.
For your link building strategy: focus on building follow links from relevant, authoritative websites. A follow link from a page with high Domain Authority is more valuable than 10 nofollow links. Use tools like Ahrefs or Semrush to check which links your competitors have — these provide hints about potential link sources. Create high-quality content that attracts links naturally (guides, statistics, research). When doing link outreach, make it clear why your target link is relevant and provides value to users. Follow links arise most naturally when you are truly outstanding — otherwise links are tagged nofollow or not set at all.
