Footer Link

In brief

Footer links are hyperlinks in the bottom section of a website, useful for internal navigation but carrying less SEO weight than content links.

Google weights footer links significantly less than contextual links in the main content because they repeat site-wide and rarely arise from genuine user interest. For internal linking they are still useful when used sparingly for truly important pages. However, a large number of keyword-optimized footer links is a warning signal for Google and can be interpreted as manipulation.

Footer link refers to a hyperlink in the footer area of a website. These links are technically identical to other links — the key difference is that they are often perceived as less valuable by both search engines and users. Footer links are frequently used for standard pages like imprint, privacy policy, or general company links. While occasional footer links are harmless, mass-placed footer links across many pages (often pointing to internal target pages) can be considered a manipulation technique and lead to penalties.

Google and other search engines analyze the position of links on a page and weight them accordingly. Links in the footer receive less weight than links in the main content, especially when the same links are repeated on every page. A massive link profile consisting primarily of recurring footer links may signal to Google artificial manipulation. Additionally, the visibility of footer links to users is low — many visitors don’t scroll to the bottom, so these links generate fewer clicks and less actual traffic than in-content links.

Best practices for footer links: use them sparingly and purposefully for legitimate reasons (legal pages, contact, sitemap). Avoid linking the same keywords from footer links on every page — that looks manipulative. If you want to place internal links, put them in the content or in a strategic navigation structure where they actually help users. One or two footer links per page are acceptable and appear natural. Monitor your link profile regularly with tools like Ahrefs or Semrush — if footer links are overrepresented, reconsider your strategy to avoid penalties.
