At the same time, you should not overload the footer with links, since Google weights site-wide links lower.

Footer optimization refers to the deliberate structuring and content strategy of a website’s footer section for better internal linking, user experience, and SEO. The footer of a website is often underestimated — yet it is a strategic area for placing important links, communicating additional information, and improving navigation. A well-optimized footer can help users explore the website, find important pages more easily, and build trust in the company.

Technically, a footer should contain the following elements: 1) Internal links to important pages (categories, product pages, guides), 2) Legal pages (imprint, privacy policy), 3) Contact information and business hours, 4) Newsletter sign-up, 5) Social media links, 6) Sitemap link. From an SEO perspective: place 3–5 internal links to important pages with relevant anchor texts — this signals to Google that these pages matter. Use structured data (schema.org) for Organization, LocalBusiness, or Contact information — this helps Google understand who and what your website represents. Footer links should appear natural and make topical sense, not look artificially placed.

For implementation: analyze which pages are not receiving enough internal links — strategically link to those in the footer. Use a simple footer layout with categories: “About Us,” “Products,” “Service,” “Legal.” Link your sitemap.xml in the footer — this helps users and Google. Add a newsletter sign-up form — it builds your email list and improves engagement. For e-commerce: link categories and top products in the footer. The footer should be mobile-friendly — many users scroll to the bottom on mobile devices. A footer is also an opportunity to place trust signals: certifications, ratings, partner logos.
