The 10 Most Common SEO Mistakes — and How to Fix Them

Many websites leave ranking potential on the table through avoidable mistakes. Some are obvious; others hide in the technical details. These ten errors come up again and again in my work as an SEO freelancer — along with the right solutions.

1. Missing or Identical Meta Titles and Descriptions

The meta title and meta description are the first things users see in search results. If they’re missing, Google generates its own versions — often unappealing ones. Even worse: identical titles across multiple pages signal to Google that the content isn’t distinct.

Fix: Write a unique title (50–60 characters) and a description (120–155 characters) for each page, including the primary keyword and a clear value proposition.

2. Missing or Misused Heading Structure

Headings (H1 through H6) structure your content for both users and search engines. Common mistakes: multiple H1 tags on one page, skipped levels (e.g., jumping from H2 directly to H4), or keywords appearing only in body text but not in headings.

Fix: Give each page exactly one H1 with the primary keyword. Use H2 for subsections, H3 below those — in logical order.

3. Thin or Low-Quality Content

Pages with little text, purely surface-level information, or copied content don’t rank. Google favors content that comprehensively and competently answers a search query.

Fix: Create content that delivers genuine value. Answer your target audience’s questions thoroughly and from real expertise. Quality beats quantity — but a certain depth is necessary to cover a topic adequately.

4. Slow Load Times

Since the introduction of Core Web Vitals, page speed is an official ranking factor. Slow pages lose both rankings and visitors — bounce rate increases with every second of load time.

Fix: Compress images, use browser caching, and minimize CSS and JavaScript. Test your pages regularly with Google PageSpeed Insights. Additional tips at Fix slow load times.

5. Website Not Optimized for Mobile

Google indexes primarily the mobile version of your website (Mobile-First Indexing). A website that performs poorly on smartphones is at a serious disadvantage in rankings.

Fix: Make sure your website is responsive, buttons are large enough to tap, and content is readable without zooming. Further guidance at Fix mobile display issues.

Internal links help Google understand your site structure and distribute link authority throughout your website. Many websites barely tap into this potential.

Fix: Consistently link related content to each other. Use descriptive anchor texts that reflect the topic of the target page — just like the links in this article.

7. Duplicate Content

When identical or very similar content is accessible under different URLs, Google doesn’t know which version to index. This dilutes your rankings. More on this in Duplicate Content.

Fix: Set canonical tags, use 301 redirects, and avoid placing the same text on multiple pages.

8. No XML Sitemap or Faulty robots.txt

Without a sitemap, Google may not find all your pages. A faulty robots.txt can even exclude entire sections of your website from indexing.

Fix: Create an up-to-date XML sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console. Check your robots.txt for unintended blocks. More at Page not indexed.

9. Ignoring Google Search Console

Search Console is the most important free SEO tool — and yet it goes unused by many website owners. It shows indexing issues, search queries, click-through rates, and technical errors.

Fix: Set up Search Console and check it at least weekly. Respond to error notifications promptly.

10. No Tracking and No Performance Measurement

Running SEO actions without measuring results means operating in the dark. Without data, you don’t know what’s working and where adjustments are needed.

Fix: Use Google Analytics and Search Console to track your key KPIs: organic visibility, clicks, rankings, and conversions. Define goals and measure progress regularly.

Mistakes Found — Now What?

If you’ve identified one or more of these mistakes on your website, that’s not a cause for concern — it’s an opportunity. Every error you fix can meaningfully improve your rankings.
